The Brother David Eddy Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2010 by State Deputy Patrick O’Donnell to recognize a Virginia Knight who displays continued leadership, inspiration, service, and commitment to the Virginia Knights of Columbus. Each year, the awardee is selected by the current State Deputy.
About Brother David S. Eddy, C.F.X.
Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, David was the third of seven children of Robert and Irene Eddy. While in high school, David announced to his parents that he intended to become a Xaverian Brother. After his profession, David began his studies at Catholic University and then transferred to the University of Massachusetts, where he received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1972. David taught at Malden Catholic and Xavier High School until 1985, when Father Paul Loverde, of the Diocese of Norwich, asked David to become his secretary in the priests’ personnel office at the chancery. That began a twenty-five year association between Bishop Loverde and David. David served as the bishop’s right-hand man in Norwich and then in the Archdiocese of Hartford when Father Loverde was named auxiliary bishop there. David and Bishop Loverde then traveled to the Diocese of Ogdensburg in upstate New York, where Bishop Loverde had been appointed Ordinary. In 1999, Bishop Loverde was appointed Ordinary of the Diocese of Arlington, and David served with him in Virginia until he died in 2010.
[Brother Eddy] worked as Bishop Loverde’s Secretary for years, and they a very visual bond as one never went anywhere without the other, constantly looking out for the other. Brother Eddy was more than a Religious Brother, more than his Secretary, more than a friend; he was like his real brother. – Patrick O’Donnell, Past State Deputy
Brother David was a true and genuine man of the Church as a disciple and as a religious. He loved the Church, and he loved the Knights of Columbus. He was such a special collaborator and Brother to me. No words can express my gratitude to God and to him. And, he also loved the Knights, and he was very active with the Knights in Connecticut, in New York, and here in Virginia. He was one of us. His memory endures. – Most Reverend Paul S.
