Virginia has a standard for professionalism developed over decades of experience in the role, with best practices and decorum commensurate with what one would expect in a leadership role representing any organization.
Pin and Emblem Placement
- Our patriotic nature is always on display when we wear the flag of our nation; nothing goes above the American flag (or the American and Virginia flag combination pin), and it is usually placed on the top left of your jacket in the lapel hole.
- The state pin for that fraternal year is generally worn directly underneath the American flag on the left side also.
- While authorized to wear state pins from previous fraternal years, it is common practice to wear the state pin for the current fraternal year out of respect for the State Deputy.

Emblem of the Order Pin
- The emblem of the order is generally worn directly across from the American flag (slightly below it) on the top right of your jacket.
- While our current state pin includes the emblem, not all do, and the emblem of the order should always be worn with pride, dignity, and honor.
- Other pins (VKCCI, KOVAR, KCIC, ACE Wings, Star District, etc.) are authorized for wear and should be worn on the right side underneath the Emblem of the Order.
Red Jackets
- The red jacket is a tradition in Virginia, representing the dedication and sacrifice District Deputies give for the good of the order on behalf of their councils.
- It matches the red ribbon on the District Deputy Medal and makes it easy to distinguish who is in charge in a crowd of mostly black/blue/gray suits.
Miniature Past and Former Medals
- District Deputies may wear their miniature medals. When wearing multiple miniature medals, it’s recommended to use a miniature medal bar from Knights Gear or a military supply store. When worn independently, they tend to fall off.
- As a general rule, the medals should be worn 1/4 inch above the pocket where your name badge is.
- The order of precedence for those is shown below.

Neckties, Shirts, Ties, and Shoes
- There is no required color or design, but generally a Knights of Columbus one is preferred. Knights Gear has a variety of choices that pair well with the red District Deputy jacket. Tie clips are generally not worn with ties. Plastic tie holders can be used instead.
- A white collared dress shirt is best practice, as it adapts to any dress code and can be worn year-round.
- Pants should be either black slacks or khakis; jeans are not to be worn at most events.
- Shoes can vary, but either black or brown is the best practice.
Wearing the District Deputy Medal
- The District Deputy Medal should be worn under the collar, resting neatly on top of your tie.
Emblem of the Order on Apparel
- That is determined by the vendor. For shirts ordered by the State Council, the name and position will be on the left, with the emblem of the order on the right.
