2015 Young Man of the Year

Charles Joseph Egress

The winner of the 2015 Virginia State Council Young Man of the Year is Charles Joseph Egress, whose nomination was submitted  by Father Edward L. Richardson Council 111984 in Chesapeake.


Charles is an outstanding student. A High School Junior and carries a 4.0 GPA.  He was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2014.  A member of the Math Honor Society – Mu Alpha Theta, AFDA Student of the Year 2013-14 and has received the Award of Academic Excellence 2012-present.


Our Young Man of the Year is also the leader of “Difference Makers”, an organization at St. Stephen the Martyr Church in Chesapeake that helps the poor and homeless.  In that role, he coordinated the following activities:


• Working at local soup kitchens and homeless shelter including Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (“NEST”)

• Volunteering at the Union Mission

• Conducting fundraising activities to provide blankets for homeless shelters

• Organizing and participating in the Chesapeake CROP Hunger Walk

• Collecting clothing for Goodwill

• Working at Good MoJo, a thrift store in Norfolk that helps homeless to working and living independently

• Participating in the Salvation Army Stocking Stuffer Program

• Coordinating prayer meetings and recruitment of new members to Difference Makers organization


At St. Stephen the Martyr:


• Altar server/cross bearer

• Usher

• Religious Education Middle School teacher assistant and also support Special Needs students

Charles Egress was taking his college SAT test on the morning of the Knights of Columbus Awards program, and so his award was accepted on his behalf by Jim Neary, the Grand Knight of Fr. Richardson Council 11984


His extracurricular activities include:


• Member of the High School Varsity Swim Team 2012-present

• Member of the High School Varsity Golf Team 2013-present

• President of the High School Junior Class 2014-15

• National Honor Society Treasurer 2015-2016

• Employed at the Battlefield Golf Course



This young Man is certainly “Making A Difference”
