District 7 Knights sponsor annual Poplar Grove National Cemetery Mass on Memorial Day 2015
The Poplar Grove National Cemetery was established in 1868 for soldiers who died during the Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns in the Civil War. More than 6,000 are buried there.
Each year, for the past fifteen years, the Knights of Columbus from Petersburg and surrounding communities have sponsored a Memorial Day Mass of Remembrance at the site to honor to honor the war dead.
The event was hosted by Petersburg Council 694, with support from all of the councils in District 7 - Fr Massey (Hopewell), St Ann (Colonial Heights), St Martin of Tours (Fort Lee), and Queen of the Americas (Dinwiddie).
More than 75 people attended the Mass, which was celebrated by Major David Kirk, Ft Lee Chaplain, with Deacons Bob Strand and Matt McLaughlin. Lector was State Secretary Elect Mike Gasper.
Special thanks go to the US Park Service for allowing us to have Mass here for the past 15 years.
