State Youth Programs
The Virginia State Council believes strongly that supporting and educating the youth of today will lead to a more secure and prosperous tomorrow. To that end the State Council supports numerous youth programs and initiatives, designed to instruct, develop, and refine needed qualities in tomorrow’s leaders: faith, initiative, leadership ability and experience, intellectual ability, physical fitness, and sportsmanship. Columbian Squires – Chairman Ruppert Beirne
The title “Columbian Squires” refers to two organizations, Squires and Squire Roses. Squires is the official Knights of Columbus youth program for Catholic men aged 10 to 18. Squire Roses is the official VA State Council Knights of Columbus youth program for Catholic women aged 10 to 18. The two programs are equal in nature and, thus far, co-locate for their Annual Meetings.

Scouting – Chairman George Costigan
Many of the 135+ Councils across the Commonwealth support the Boy Scouts of America through hosting Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venturing Crews. The Councils may offer a place to meet and adult leadership, financial backing, and/or advisors for special projects, such as the Ad Altare Dei award. For more information about Virginia Knights of Columbus Councils that support Scouting, contact George Costigan at the above e-mail address.

Athletics – Chairman Lanny White
“Mens sana in corpore sano” – A sound mind in a sound body. The athletics programs reward fitness, perseverance, and good sportsmanship. In addition, they are loads of fun! The Soccer Challenge is a penalty-kick contest, scoring points for where in the net the athlete kicks the ball. Local contests will be held in the September timeframe, with District and State championships held in October and November, respectively. The Free Throw Championship needs little explanation, given its name. Local contests will be held around January, District in February, and State in March. Both contests are for young men and women, aged 10-14.

Intellectual Contests – Chairman Jason Seiler
As the Latin above suggests, one desires a sound mind to go with the sound body. For that reason the State Council participates in two contests for kids. For those aged 8 to 14 we have the Poster Contest, which has children sketch about the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse. For older youth, specifically those in 8th through 12th grades, we sponsor an Essay Contest. The theme of the contest is “The Responsibility of the Catholic Citizen in a Free Society.”
Fraternally,
Jason A Seiler, FDD, PGK, PFN
State Youth Chairman
