Silver Rose

THE RUNNING OF THE SILVER ROSE

The “Running of the Silver Rose” began in 1960, as an initiative of the members of the Columbian Squires, the youth arm of the Knights of Columbus. The program has continued since then and now also includes individual councils and Assemblies in several jurisdictions, including Virginia.  The program was expanded in 2001 by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson who initiated the “Running of the Silver Rose” from Toronto at the 119th Annual Convention of the Supreme Council.

There are now three silver rose bouquets which travel annually from Canada, through the United States, and into Mexico.  Their journey concludes in Mexico City at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe where the bouquets are presented to Our Lady.  The bouquets, symbols of unity among the peoples in the Americas, are also symbols of the pro-life movement. The program’s devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe stems from the fact that she is considered the patroness of the pro-life movement.

Each part of the bouquet has an important meaning. The five roses (one of the three is a bouquet of three roses only) represent the five decades in which this tradition has been in place. The seven guides carrying the roses represent the sacraments of the Catholic faith and the ways to approach God. The thorns represent all the efforts and sacrifices of the Columbian Squires and Knights of Columbus along the way. And the strong stem represents faith.

The Virginia State Council’s participation in this year’s event will begin on August 8, when officers of the Maryland Knights of Columbus deliver the Silver Rose to Virginia officers. It will end on August 29, when the Silver Rose is given over to the Knights of Columbus in Tennessee.  The route the Silver Rose will follow in Virginia this year will be roughly one from Northern Virginia down to Fredericksburg, then across the state from east to west, and then finally down I-81 to Tennessee.

Councils and parishes are encouraged to receive the Silver Rose and to holdprayer services as it makes its journey through Virginia.  Prayer services are about 40 minutes long, and include a rosary and scripture readings.  There is also an opportunity for intercessory prayers.  Any Council holding a prayer service should involve local Assemblies as well as the youth of the parish, especially Columbian Squires and Squire Roses.   Pastors and parish members should certainly be invited to attend.  As a final matter, someone from the Council or Assembly should make it a point to publicize the prayer service in advance in the church bulletin, take pictures of the prayer service and note the number of participants.

For more information about the Silver Rose Program, or to schedule a prayer service to receive the Silver Rose, contact David Harris, Church Activities Chairman, at churchactivities@vakofc.org.
