August 7, 2013 - Pope Leo XIII Council 10804 sponsored the 26th annual Rodgers Family Kids Fishing Day (KFD) for 182 boys and girls at the Lynnhaven Fishing Pier in Virginia Beach. The event benefits young boys and girls (ages 6-18) from all eleven units of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia (BGCSEVA). More than 100 adult volunteers from Council 10804 and other community supporters were joined by 25 Boys & Girls Club chaperons.
Volunteers reported at 7:30 a.m., and the children at 8:00 a.m. (although many came early this year!). The event lasted until noon, and the kids were treated to a Knights of Columbus hot dog bag lunch before leaving the pier.
This year, prior to the KFD event, co-leader and PGK Greg Brown visited each of the eleven Boys & Girls Club units to make an educational presentation on fishing. There was also a PowerPoint presentation on the Chesapeake Bay and on the Blue Crab, and each child had a chance to operate a spin fishing pole (focused on how to use the bail on the reel by dropping/reeling in a bottom rig with a 2 oz. sinker).
A total of 725 children - divided into four age groups - received the educational presentation prior to the August 7 event. Thanks to a generous grant from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) and additional financial support from the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club, each child took home the brand new fishing pole they had just used to fish with, and also received a 26th Annual Rodgers Family Kids Fishing Day T-shirt with the Knights of Columbus emblem on it as a reminder of their great pier fishing experience.
For most of the children, it was their first ever fishing experience.
