Culture of Life Activities

John Wilkes

Chairman

"The Gospel of life is for the whole of human society. To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good. It is impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop. A society lacks solid foundations when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the dignity of the person, justice and peace, but then, on the other hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or tolerating a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated, especially where it is weak or marginalized. Only respect for life can be the foundation and guarantee of the most precious and essential goods of society, such as democracy and peace."

The Knights of Virginia, like Knights everywhere, believe that fighting to protect the innate right to life of every human being, from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death, is one of the most important tasks that we can undertake.  During the years since the Supreme Court's infamous 1973 Roe v. Wade decision was handed down, Virginia Knights have undertaken a variety of efforts to promote a Culture of Life:

March for Life - Virginia Knights joined March for Life founder Nellie Gray in organizing the very first March in protest of Roe v. Wade, and have been an integral part of planning, organizing and managing the March for each of the past 43 years. Virginia Knights serve as marshals, collect funds to support the March, hand out signs for the marchers, provide first aid, and contribute to its overall success.

What began as a small demonstration rapidly grew to be the largest annual, peaceful, civil rights demonstration in the world. It provides the occasion for hundreds of thousands of people from all around the United States to come to the nation's capital and bear witness to the truth about abortion. The next March for Life will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017. Complete, up-to-date information can be found at the March for Life website.

Ultrasound Initiative - Virginia Knights are active participants in the Order's nationwide Ultrasound Program, under which local councils raise money for new, technologically advanced ultrasound machines for local pregnancy resource centers, with the Supreme Council matching the local council's donation.

As of mid-July 2013, Virginia Knights have donated seven ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers all around the state, and several more donations will be completed soon. Learn more about Virginia's Pregnancy Resource Centers HERE.

The overwhelming number of pregnant women who are able to see the child growing within them through ultrasound technology decide to forgo an abortion and give birth to their child, and these devices are saving lives every day.

40 Days for Life - 40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion through prayer, fasting, peaceful vigil and community outreach.  40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion.
